Name: Mary Terese Schelby
Volunteer, Concord Homeless Resource Center.
How did you get into volunteering and why?
I started about four years ago at the Cold Weather Shelter. I read about it in the Concord Monitor. I feel strongly that as the wealthiest nation in the world, there shouldn’t be a problem with homelessness.
Why did you choose the Concord Homeless Resource Center?
I was aware of it, aware that it it helps people get food, get shelter, get jobs and I totally agreed with that. I’m kind of tough, philosophically, when it comes to where I’ll volunteer. If I didn’t agree completely with everything they did, I wouldn’t be there.
What is the most rewarding thing about volunteering?
Well, for me, I’m a people person. I really enjoy meeting people. Personally, I’ve had really wonderful experiences. It’s been a pleasure to be here – it’s a gift to me.
Most frustrating?
When I started to work (at the Cold Weather Shelter), people were scared for me. They’d see me the next day and take a sigh of relief. But I’d say, “Those people look just like you and me. We’re one step from them. We all make mistakes, we all make goof-ups, but some people end up paying more for those mistakes.”
What do you do when you’re not volunteering?
I don’t watch TV. I read a lot, I’m a library trustee and I’m a driver for two programs – Medicaid and CAP.
Hidden talent?
I don’t know if it’s hidden, but I love to organize and clean. I get great pleasure from it.
Guilty pleasure?
Rock music.
