Under the Isles of Shoals
J. Dennis Robinson
2012, 156 pages
Nonfiction
With numerous current and historical photos and illustrations, this book recounts the lengthy history of the Isles of Shoals as revealed from the written records and the archaeological digs on the Isles, particularly at Smuttynose during the last four years.
Robinson was a volunteer co-curator of an exhibit at Discover Portsmouth in the summer of 2012, and this book was written to accompany and enhance that exhibit. The author says this book is archaeology “lite” for the public.
Easily understood with lots of pictures, this book is an excellent introduction to the history of the isles and the important part they played in the history of New England – first as a fishing center and later as vacation spot for visitors and New England artists, musicians, and writers.
It’s a nice complement to our Concord Reads programs this year.
