For a third year, the Concord’s Coolest Plunge Team will raise money for local Special Olympics athletes by rushing into the icy Atlantic Ocean on Feb. 3. The Team joins hundreds of plungers from throughout the state at Hampton Beach for Special Olympics New Hampshire’s annual Penguin Plunge.

The first Penguin Plunge in 2000 had 159 participants, including Kim Murdoch, captain of the Concord’s Coolest Team. Last year’s event featured 703 plungers, and raised $508,692 to support the 4,686 athletes who participate each year in more than 20 Special Olympics New Hampshire events.

Several local luminaries have participated in the Concord’s Coolest Team’s first two jaunts into the frigid Atlantic, including Mayor Jim Bouley, City Councilors Steve Shurtleff and Mike DelloIacono, Concord Fire Chief Dan Andrus and Deputy Chief Sean Toomey, Concord Police Chief John Duval, joined by sergeants Cori Casey and Joe Wright, Matt Walsh, Mark Ciborowski, and more.

The theme for 2013’s Plunge is “Going to the Chapel,” which will be represented in the Plunge attire of some participants. New plungers are always welcome to join the Concord’s Coolest Team. Registration opened Nov. 5. Contact Kim Murdoch at murdochsocialcapital@gmail.com  to learn how to join the ranks of Concord’s Coolest, or visit facebook.com/ConcordsCoolest.

Also, stay tuned for an announcement of new twists to the annual January Ice Sit fundraiser to support the Concord’s Coolest Plunge Team.
