The Concord Public Library Foundation invites the public to attend a reception for the 2012 recipients of the Elizabeth Yates Award on Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Children’s Room. The annual award is given to a resident of the greater Concord area who is actively engaged in inspiring young people to read. This year’s award is being given to four such residents: Janet Ulbrich and her Labrador Retriever Lily and Brenda Kern and her Wheaton Terrier Sparkle. These dogs and their handlers have been the stars of the library’s Paws for Pages program, where children practice reading aloud to these two therapy dogs. Libraries across the country have provided such programs and find that children gain confidence and skills by reading to a non-judgmental listener. Please join us as we honor these special volunteers.
