The Concord Police Deparment gave us access to some recently unearthed logbooks from as far back as the early 1900s. We thought they were a fascinating look at the way things used to be in Concord, so we've pulled out some choice entries.
May 20, 1903: Isriel Champagne for fast-driving on Main Street. Paid $11.88.
June 17, 1903: Christopher Golden, Drunk, Merrimack Street. Age 34, Married, Irish. 30 days to farm for common drunkard.
May 29, 1904: Peter Chopulah for keeping his candy store open on a Sunday. Paid $11.88.
Sept. 15, 1906: Frank Watterson, Edward O'Keefe, John Laney, Prosper Parineau and Frank Parineau for Larceny of Vegetables from FW Cheney Garden.
Sept. 10, 1938: George Speed, Levi Lacoy, Daniel Burke, Cyrus Morris arrested for gambling in Rolfe's lumber yard on Washington St. $5.26 in cash, table and deck of cards taken to headquarters.
Oct. 6, 1938: Gene Cooper complains of Nils Sodastrom of Charles St. kicking his boy in the side. Cooper says he don't want it to happen again. Saw Sodastrom and he said he would see Cooper.
Oct. 10, 1938: Emery Avery, 23 Dover St., walked out of Washington Grill and did not pay .60 for meal. Found him in the bog. He paid and took 7:00 p.m. bus.
Oct. 19, 1938: Told Ed Tally about his dog. He got mad and said the dog will stay there and nobody will do anything about it. In other words, we can go to Hell.
Nov. 1, 1938: Pocket book found on Charles St. 8 cents in it.
Dec. 11, 1938: A man reported a rumpus of some sort in the rear of Thirty Pines. He said a woman ran like hell into the woods with two men after her. Went down but couldn't find anything.
Jan. 21, 1939: Reported a fight on W. Canal St. Could not find anyone but think that Albert Lavoie was one of them.
May 4, 1939: Archie Preve complains of high school boys blocking up the doorway at Joe Rivier's store. Told the boys to keep moving.
May 10, 1939: Someone broke into Golf Club at West Concord and stole a number of golf balls, value about $100. Keep on the look out.
March 23, 1939: Jenney Bean reports her boy lost a pair of glasses while skiing.
June 28, 1939: Mr. Boulyer of Concord says a man jumped on his car running board this afternoon on a back road in Canterbury and demanded a ride to Penacook. The man refused to get off the car and Boulyer started up and he got off.
