Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell sets up his homemade dunk tank in his front yard, sits on the hot seat and dares passersby to dunk him! Once he gets knocked into the water, he swims up to the side and presses his palm against the plexiglass tank side to display the city memo Sharpied on his hand.

night out on the town
National Night Out is America's night out against crime, and Aug. 7 will mark the 29th annual National Night Out across the country. The event is held throughout the country annually to promote cooperation between the police and the community. (Don't make the same mistake we did and show up in a cocktail dress . . . hey, how were we supposed to know it wasn't that kind of night out?)
The Concord community is invited to be part of the National Night Out event this year at Rollins Park on Aug. 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. The event will be sponsored by the Concord Police Department, Target and Concord Recreational Department, along with several other supporting agencies, businesses and community organizations who will be in attendance. Criminals aren't expected to be among the supporting agencies.
Concord will be participating in the traditional display of support by asking all area businesses and residents to turn on outdoor lights from 7 to 10 p.m. as a show of support to law enforcement and the objectives of the National Night Out program. Also, if you have a bat signal, turn that on, as well.
Additionally, the partners and departments will be celebrating with the community with a variety of events at Rollins Park, including food, music, bike safety, inflatable slide, animal displays, contests, youth activities, Touch-A-Truck program and information display tables.
The National Night Out Campaign traditionally involves citizens, law enforcement, city departments, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials and is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Hours extended
Effective Aug. 2, the collections office will extend its hours open to the public until 6 p.m. on Thursday evenings. The additional hours will make it more convenient for residents who find it difficult to register their automobiles or pay their property taxes during regular office hours. Those who find it easy to pay during those hours are still welcome to use the extended time. New office hours will be 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thursday.
