How long have you been a lifeguard?
This is my first year.
What made you want to be a lifeguard?
I like to swim, I like to be around water so this is good for me.
What SPF sunblock do you use on the job?
50.
Have you ever had to rescue anybody?
Not yet – it's the first week.
What are some common things you have to look out for around the pool?
A lot of kids run around the pool, a lot of people wear illegal life jackets. Most people don't know that there are five different classes of life jackets.
Do you ever use your whistle when you're not on the job to get people to listen to you?
I tested it at home, but I've never used it like that!
Did you have to be trained to run in slow motion, a la Baywatch?
Actually, it was just the opposite of that. Drownings happen so fast that you have to be a fast person, so if I ran in slow motion, that wouldn't be good.
