The Food Snob was reading the recent “Arcade Issue” of the Insider when we realized – we've never eaten at the Gas Lighter! But it's famed for its burgers! We had to rectify the situation, and rectify we did, with a trip to the 204 N. Main St. restaurant.
The interior of the Gas Lighter was a bit VFW-ey; it had the feel of a dingy sports bar. The Ms. Pac-Man table game in the corner was a cool touch. There were a few beers on tap, but the Snob is all business, so the Snob and the Snob's companion ordered Snapples. $2.25 for a pink lemonade?! That's what we get for trying to watch our figure.
We ordered a grilled chicken salad and a “Texas” cheeseburger. Apparently, “Texas” means that they put lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on it – just like they do in Texas! It was like taking a trip to the Lone Star State, in cheeseburger form.
The burger ($6) was pretty delicious, regardless of the fact that the patty was of the frozen variety at some point in its lifetime. We guess it's like they say: “Everything's bigger in Texas, except the hamburger patties, which are the same size, but frozen.” Still, it was juicy, savory and eaten by us.
The grilled chicken salad ($7.20), although not billed as such, was the epitome of “Texas-style.” It was huge! Piled high with grilled chicken, the salad was brimming with cucumber, pepperencinis, tomato, onion and anything else one could desire in a salad. Thank the dining gods that the Snob brought an eating companion along – this was not some cursory salad meant to tide one over until the real meal comes along. This was a full-on entree of a salad. We weren't even left with room for dessert (a rare occasion in the stomach of the Snob).
