City briefly

Route 3 improvements

In this week’s issue, you’ll experience what it’s like to be an Insider (it’s both more and less glamorous than you’d imagine). But, we know what mystery you’d really like to unravel: what goes on inside the mind of City Manager Tom Aspell?

To help answer this burning question, we took a look at Aspell’s weekly memo.
The first thing we learned is that Tom is the type of man who cares deeply about Route 3 improvements. Or he pretends to, at least.

“After a brief hiatus for the bidding process, the Route 3 corridor (North) improvement project will resume,” Tom wrote. “Engineering Services staff hosted a preconstruction conference this past Monday, outlining the details of the third phase of the project (Lake Street to Palm Street).”

A preconstruction conference? How’d we miss the invite on that party?

Tom continued: “Continental Paving is the selected contractor and reports a project start date of Sept. 7. . . The public may stay abreast of construction schedules and details by visiting the concordnh.gov and clicking on the “Construction Update” link or through the on-site message boards.”

So good! So good!

You may want to practice your “Sweet Caroline” lyrics, because the recreation department has tickets available for the Sept. 19 Boston Red Sox/Toronto Blue Jays game. Tickets are $65 each for residents and $80 for non-residents.

The cost covers admission to the game and a ride on a school bus down to Boston. Juicy Juice and animal crackers are not included.

For more information, call the rec department at 225-8690.

School bus safety

Keeping on the topic of big yellow buses, Tom wrote that with the start of the school year, the Concord Police Department will be conducting school bus safety patrols throughout the city.
According to Tom, these patrols will be focused on addressing the violations by drivers who do not stop when required as children are getting on and off the bus, and drivers who cause other unsafe conditions.

Expect to see officers patrolling during both the morning and afternoon school bus routes, Tom wrote.

And now for today’s lesson in School Bus Safety 101:

“The Concord Police Department reminds motorists that, upon meeting or overtaking, from either direction, any school bus which has stopped on the roadway for the purpose of loading or unloading children, the driver shall stop their vehicle before reaching the bus at least 25 feet away.

“The driver shall not proceed until such school bus resumes motion, or until flashing red lights cease to operate. These restrictions include multi-lane roadways, such as Loudon Road or Main Street.”

Class dismissed.
