Tales from the underground

Last week, Second Start Alternative High School unearthed some ancient artifacts. The items came from a time when rapper Jay-Z was singing about his hard-knock life and Jolt Cola was still popular.

Ten years ago, Second Starters placed items they deemed important into a time capsule after digging up the class of 1990s throwbacks. They included tabloids, letters, an issue of the Concord Monitor (we're sure it would have been a copy of The Insider had it existed back then), a can of Mountain Dew, a hip-hop hits CD and a few packs of cigarettes for good measure. Current students had a good chuckle at the container's contents, but Kristy Daniels (pictured left) and Elizabeth Duncan (pictured right) were especially interested. The longtime friends were students in 2000 and specifically came back to reminisce.

This year's students carried the tradition on by burying their own things. Curious about what they chose to place underground? You'll have to wait until 2020 to find out.
