This month, Anita Hickey talks with vocalist and fellow senior, Lani Kangas.
As a resident of our community for 43 years what do you think makes this an ideal city to reside in?
Concord offers its residents a small-town feeling. It is centrally located and within an hour or so you can be at the mountains, the ocean or dining in Boston.
What improvements would make this a unique community for seniors?
Concord needs housing for middle-class seniors that do not require constant rent increases so that seniors can afford the rent while living on a fixed income – something like the CATCH Program. I would also like to see more restaurants that serve healthy food, and concerts that are affordable for seniors living on limited budgets.
What are your hobbies?
In the summer I spend time in my flower and vegetable gardens. I love to garden! Twelve years ago I started making jewelry. When one of my favorite pieces broke, I decided to repair it myself. After the successful completion of that project, it gave me the idea that I could design and make my own. I was juried and accepted at the area craft fairs. I also design and sell privately to customers. However, the most important interest in my life is performing music.
Tell us about your singing career.
I discovered I loved singing when I was in the fifth grade. I participated in a school talent show and my music teacher was encouraging. My dreams of performing occurred all through childhood. Whenever I could get them to listen, I would sing to my friends.
In my thirties, I became the vocalist in the Gary Densmore Band and performed with them for seven years. After that, I was part of a group formed by Roger Bergeron and Frank Nadeau, called Image. Frank and Roger were also members of the Freese Band (Ed. – also known as the Freese Brothers Big Band) and when their vocalist left I was invited to replace her. My performance with the Freese Band lasted for eight fabulous years.
At the present time, Roger and I have created a musical duo called Lani & Roger. We perform at wedding ceremonies and receptions, parties and family gatherings. Working with music files, most of which we create ourselves, enables us to have our own “band” with us, making our performances more affordable, especially in this tight economy. At times, I perform alone under the name Lani Tunes.
What type of music do you enjoy listening to?
I enjoy many different kinds. When listening to vocal music, I either sing along or study the style of the performer. Instrumental music great to just relax and enjoy the music.
What would you like to tell other seniors?
You should take time to try new things and find out what pleases you. Spend time on projects that are fulfilling and make you happy. You have earned that right! Stay as physically active as possible. My motto is “Keep going with what you have left.” Always strive to prepare healthy meals and stay as healthy as possible as the years go by. I feel it is most important for seniors to stay in contact with ones friends and be happy!
