The spring portion of the Walker Lecture Fund's 113th season opens on Wednesday evening, March 3, at the Concord City Auditorium with Jay Daly and the New England Brass in a program called “The New England Brass Plays Gershwin (And Other Musical Gems).” As with all Walker Lecture events, admission is free and no tickets are required. Doors to the auditorium will open at 7 p.m. and the program begins at 7:30 p.m.
Highlights of the program include trumpeter Jay Daly, leader of the New England Brass, in “A Tribute to Five Decades of Popular Trumpet Solos” and noted pianist George Lopez with Gershwin's “I Got Rhythm” and “Rhapsody in Blue.” Other selections include Gershwin's “Prelude No. 2” and “Porgy and Bess Suite” arranged by Daly.
The New England Brass has been playing to audiences for 30 years. These musicians make their living as top, “first call” players occupying principal positions in many of the orchestras and ensembles in the Boston area.
In addition to Daly and Lopez, the group includes Richard Kelley on trumpet, Alyssa Coffey on horn, Walter Bostian on trombone and bass guitar, Chip Halt on tuba, Tom Ferrante on woodwinds and Michael Ambroszewski on percussion.
The March 3 program is the first of six events in the spring season of the Walker Lecture Series. Upcoming programs are:
• The film “Inside Iran Today,” March 10, 7:30 p.m.
• Rebecca Rule's “Crosscut,” March 24, 7:30 p.m.
• Pianist Paul Dykstra, March 31, 7:30 p.m.
