Japanese restaurants aren’t the only ones with the goods. Market Basket, Hannaford and Shaw’s all stock sushi as well! So, next time you’re picking up bread and milk, throw some sushi into the mix.
Shaw’s
Past the produce is Shaw’s sushi bar. Shaw’s has a small selection of maki rolls starting at $3.99 for 16 rolls. I did not see any raw fish, but they had several shrimp options, California rolls (crabmeat, avocado and cucumber), eel, avocado rolls and more. When we wandered over, there was a man behind the bar preparing something – it’s good to know what you get is fresh. Plus, it all smelled very good and looked appetizing.
Hannaford
Same price range as Shaw’s (maki rolls started at $3.99 for 16 rolls) but there was a wider and more innovative selection. Plus, Hannaford had an assortment of raw items along with vegetable rolls, eel, shrimp, crab and the like. We’ve tried their sushi before, and it was pretty tasty considering it’s grocery store sushi. We’d purchase it again.
Market Basket
Market Basket had the smallest yet most interesting selection. Their rolls were much larger than the average bite-sized pieces and started at $5.99 for 9. Along with California rolls, they had a few unusual choices. One looked like it was stuffed with some sort of crab salad (it had imitation crab and a lot of mayonnaise in it) and didn’t look like your “typical” sushi. No raw fish, but in this scenario, we think that’s a good thing.
