Give a gift with character

Radio stations are already playing Christmas music and the stores are decked out with holiday décor, and it’s not even Thanksgiving. This year, we’ve decided to throw in the towel and embrace holiday shopping early. As the saying goes, “if you can’t beat them, join them.”

To that end, we decided to start a weekly series with suggestions for some different places to shop for friends and family. So, to some off-beat and out-of-the-way places we will go!

To kick off the series, we traveled to Storrs Street to stop in at Concord Antique Gallery. The shop was recently voted “best antique shop” in a survey conducted by the Monitor, an award it has received four year in a row.

With more 155 dealers and two shops within the main store (Concord Coin and The Saltbox), it’s a smorgasbord of old, new and everything in between.

You might have reservations about giving something used, but think of it this way: New Englanders understand the value of character. You’re just not going to find lamps, glassware, paintings and collectibles like this in stores. And who knows – your find might actually be worth something.

As an added bonus, we noticed that some dealers were offering discounts on items in their booths. Who doesn’t like saving money?

Concord Antique Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, call 225-2070, e-mail cag@concordantiquegallery.com or visit concordantiquegallery.com.

You’ll find a selection of items we found in our tour of the shop below.
