We received a news release from the Concord Public Library detailing some of the ways you can help the library as it (and many others) deal with budget shortfalls.
Save the magazines and newspapers
Program budget reductions made it necessary for the library to cancel 25 percent of its magazine subscriptions and 50 percent of its newspaper subscriptions. The library is seeking cash donations to pay for these 70 magazine and newspaper titles. This is an opportunity for inpiduals, families and businesses to invest in the library. With your help, the library will be able to provide more resources. Your contribution will benefit the entire community! The list of the specific titles and their subscription prices is available on our website at concordpubliclibrary.net or ask for information at the main library reference desk, the children’s room, or the Penacook branch library.
Recognition of your donation of a magazine subscription will be placed on the plastic cover of the current magazine issue, or, for a newspaper subscription, on a sign near the newspaper racks. We will also recognize our donors on our web page.
For information contact Patricia Immen at 230-3680 or e-mail: pimmen@onconcord.com.
Stock the shelves program
Budget reductions this year means that the library will be buying half as many books as in previous years, including fewer duplicate copies of best sellers. We are turning to our patrons and the community for help.
Can you help us stock the shelves? The library has created wish lists for four categories of books: children’s books, adult fiction titles, adult non-fiction titles, and Penacook branch books. The wish lists are available at local bookstores or online.
It’s easy to make a donation. Here’s how:
– Go to Gibson’s Bookstore or Borders Books in Concord and make a purchase from a wish list at the store. The bookstore and the library will make arrangements to deliver the book to the library.
– Shop online at Amazon.com, and search for “Concord Public Library” under the “Wish List” tab. Amazon will ship us the book.
A book plate will be placed in each book with the donor’s name. Thank you for your support!

Volunteer program
In an effort to further enhance the library’s services and its capacity to meet the needs of our community, we hope to build a core team of volunteers to lend assistance to library staff. Our staff will be happy to provide training, guidance and support. Please consider joining us as we work to reach our goals! Whether you can volunteer once a week or just once a year, your time and talent is valuable and greatly appreciated. Please stop into the library for a volunteer brochure, or visit concordpubliclibrary.net and view our volunteer opportunities and complete a volunteer application if you are interested in applying.
We will also hold a volunteer day on Friday, Oct. 16, from 10 -11:30 a.m. Join us in the library auditorium. You can try your hand at a quick and easy task, such as cleaning children’s books, and learn more about the library’s volunteer opportunities. There is no training requirement for the introductory session. It’s an opportunity for you to find out what kinds of help we need, and for us to get to know you!
