Because every dog has its day in the village

Canterbury Shaker Village, 288 Shaker Road, Canterbury, celebrates the canine members of the family at its second annual Dewey the Dog and Friends Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 13. Visitors may bring dogs to the village and enjoy more than 600 acres of fields, trails and ponds.

Sponsored by Elektrisola, Dewey Day activities include agility demonstrations, after which visitors may try out the sports with their dogs, as well as demonstrations by New England K9 Search and Rescue and a presentation on “Holistic Health Care for Companion Animals.”

Visitors and their dogs may enter the “I Look Like My Dog” photo contest or bring a photo along to enter in the “Best Friends” photo contest, with three categories: best photo, silliest photo and most original photo subject. Visitors will vote on both photo contests and prizes will be awarded.

Canines and their owners can discover the village grounds in the Dewey Scavenger Hunt. Vendors of products for companion animals will be on hand at the Dewey Emporium. Visitors may also enjoy the village's trails with their dogs.

Water stations will be available for dogs. An outdoor grill lunch will be available from The Shaker Table beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-18 and children 5 and younger visit for free. In the spirit of the day, visitors are encouraged to bring an item – food, blankets and or/towels to the donation bin for local companion animal rescue organizations.

Visitors are requested to bring dogs on leashes. Dogs are not allowed inside the buildings.
