Don’t Look Twice
Andrew Gross
2009, 378 pages
Setting: Contemporary Connecticut
When the weather takes a turn toward triple digits and it is almost too hot to think, grab a book, head for the shade with some cold lemonade and settle down for a quick summer read. Andrew Gross’s new book would be a great one to grab.
“Don’t Look Twice” starts with a bang, and keeps the reader guessing until the end. Detective Ty Hauk and his daughter stop at the gas station to pick up a few snacks before heading out for a day on the water. They never make it; two gunmen open fire on the station, leaving a U.S district attorney dead. What appears to be gang retribution turns out to be much more, as Ty follows the leads to corrupt pit bosses, dirty politicians, manipulative lobbyists and international intrigue. As he follows the trail of dead bodies and lies, Hauk must come to terms with how power has been wielded to benefit the wealthy.
Andrew Gross has coauthored several books with James Patterson and written a number of other novels. He knows how to hook a reader and keep the suspense building until the very end. The Connecticut and Maine settings also add some local interest to this particular novel of suspense.
