Something new in the children’s room

If you’re looking for a great way to get some meaningful conversations going with your kids, please stop by the Concord Public Library’s children’s room and check out Skipping Stones Magazine.
Purchased as part of a grant dedicated to expanding our multicultural materials, Skipping Stones is a magazine that reflects the world’s cultural and linguistic persity. The intent of the magazine, as stated on its content page, is to “explore stewardship of the ecological and social webs that nurture us.”

Skipping Stones invites children all over the world to submit articles, poetry, artwork and creative writing. The magazine encourages children to share their opinions and experiences.

Some articles, written by adults, are designed to broaden children’s understanding of the world and its people. Recent issues have included such topics as fair trade chocolate, health issues, Bahá’í and an exploration of adoption, written by an adult in collaboration with several adopted children.

Reading alone, children in the upper-elementary grades and older would enjoy Skipping Stones. However, I recommend that parents and any school-age children read this magazine together. It’s a great way to share learning about our world.
