Ender in Exile
Orson Card
2008, 377 pages
Orson Scott Card has added another title to the Ender series, and as usual, it fulfills expectations. This novel, while it can be read on its own, falls between “Ender’s Game” and “Speaker for the Dead.”
Ender has saved the earth from the Formics, but due to his notoriety he cannot return to earth, as he would only become a pisive pawn of the political leaders. Instead, he and his sister, Valentine, travel to the first international fleet colony where Ender will be the newly appointed governor.
His travel does not go smoothly, as the manipulative commander of the ship feels he would be the better governor. Ender must deal with this situation while trying to understand what is preying on his mind. Why did the Formic queens stay on their planet and allow him to kill them all? He also struggles with the knowledge that he has caused the deaths of thousands of humans and an entire species in the war. Will he find the answers to his questions at the new colony?
Ender’s ethical concerns regarding war and colonization add depth to the action and adventure of this science fiction novel.
