City Briefly

This is exciting!
Online stuff for you
Says our venerable city manager, Tom Aspell: “In an ongoing effort to increase public access, the Community Development Department is pleased to announce that building permit/certificate of occupancy status information can now be tracked online.”
Cue up the dramatic music. To access this free service, says Aspell, visit onconcord.com and go to the Building and Code Services page under the “Departments” pull-down menu. The “Building Permit Information” link can be found in the left-hand column.
Customers will be able to follow the progress of their project’s review and directly contact the pertinent inspector should any questions arise.
End dramatic music.

Ski much?
You totally should
Says Aspell, who is never fazed by our bad attitude in this column: “Cross-country skiing has been excellent at Beaver Meadow Golf Course.”
And for those skiers who enjoy calories, Aspell has this: The golf course restaurant will be open this weekend, weather permitting, from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Cemetery news
It was about time
This next part is all Aspell: “The cemetery staff of the General Services Department continues to provide the public with outstanding, if not always recognizable, service.”
So get ready to recognize, ungrateful people!
“As most people are aware,” Aspell continues, unfazed, “the cemetery staff performs interments 12 months a year, even if there is freezing temperatures, 3 feet of snow on the ground, blizzards, or torrential rain.
“The families of the interred frequently express their gratitude for this excellent service and commitment.”
And there’s more! “The cemetery staff also keeps the roads to the cemeteries open throughout the winter months to allow for interments or families to visit their loved ones’ final resting places,” Aspell says. “As a reminder to the public, the cemetery roads are opened once a winter storm has essentially stopped. If the storm is on a weekend, the roads are opened on Monday.”
And here’s another little shout-out: “The cemetery staff is committed to the Highways and Utilities Division for use as plow truck drivers and wingers during the swing shift from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and they also assist on weekends with snow removal operations.”
You’re beautiful, all of you!

Crew up to something
Boat house buildin’
In 2008, says Aspell, the Friends of Concord Crew raised $333,246 to build a boat house on the Merrimack River.
The Friends of Concord Crew are kicking the project off with a groundbreaking ceremony on Feb. 4 at 3:30 p.m. on the Merrimack River next to Everett Arena. Hey crew, want to raise some money for us?
