Ask the Elders: Weight loss

Dear Elders, Do you have a weight problem like I do, or can you eat whatever you want and still not gain a pound? What’s your secret?

Signed,
The Yankee

Bill Twibill
Dear Fellow Yankee,
Just reading the question put on five pounds around my waist.
All I have to do is to smell the cookies or breads in a bakery and the buttons pop from my shirts. So obviously, I have no secret to share except I really do my best never to snack between meals, no fried foods, no burgers from Burger King or McDonald’s ever, you get the message.
But I confess when in Maine my willpower disappears for fried haddock, onion rings and fries, with Diet Coke, of course.
The holidays add to my willpower breakdown. On the bright side, it’s winter, and the sweaters are a great cover over the popping shirt buttons. Where did I put those gingerbread cookies?

Dear Yankee:
I am one of the 88 people in zip code 03301 and 03303 who can eat and drink whatever I want and not gain an ounce.
It’s not a secret, it’s a fact. Just the other day I finished off a side of beef and a gallon of maple walnut ice cream and I am still around 425 pounds. So, don’t fret, be like me and eat up!!

Dear Yankee,
Have you noticed that often the people who can eat anything are the ones who are always moving around? Instead of watching TV (and nibbling), they go for a walk. Or are the ones to jump up and get what is needed.
The old “Eat Less and Exercise More” works. Avoid snacking when doing other things, but if you must, then choose low-calorie items.
At home, make a big batch of something nutritious you like fairly well and eat it for dinner each night until it is gone. It is easier to eat less of it by the end of the pot!
Instead of buying or making the whole pie, have one piece when you go out.

Dear Yankee,
There is a reason why my picture is from the shoulders up!

Dear Yankee,
Like you, I have tried every diet known to mankind.
Only two worked, but even they didn’t get me to keep it off. I think all that can be done is to get exercise, as they say, four to five times a week, one-half to one hour each day. Then start limiting fats and carbs.
Crash diets have never worked. They say you have to change your whole way of life, and I find it very difficult. If I can maintain my current (over)weight a few more years, I can make it until the end without hiring six line-backers for my coffin.
The sad part of it all is that it all begins when you are young, and it keeps getting worse till the end. Ignore the ads that tell you that you CAN eat all you want of anything and still lose weight. THEY LIE!
