To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19, the Greater Concord Interfaith Council will present excerpts from the civil rights leader's speeches, sermons and writings along with the Biblical passages Dr. King drew on. The event will feature area ministers and others speaking about the Biblical passages and their use by Dr. King. Included in the roster of speakers is the Right Rev. Douglas Theuner, retired Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire. The public is invited to come for any part of the program, from noon to 2 p.m., at South Congregational Church, 27 Pleasant St.
“The more I read about the Bible, the more scripture I notice in Dr. King's sermons and speeches,” said the Rev. Jason Wells one of the organizers of the event. “I want others to be aware of the importance of the Bible in informing Dr. King's call for justice. By showing the connection between the speeches and the Bible, people may discover new depth in some familiar scriptures, and gain a greater appreciation for the role of religion in the civil rights movement.”
The Greater Concord Interfaith Council is an association of many faith groups whose goal is to provide a respectful environment in which to explore religious persity, discuss issues of concern and to act together on behalf of justice, tolerance and human need.
